Dolly and Ropo's Marriage Certificate

  • Dolly listed her age as 18, but actually she had just recently turned 16. English law at the time actually required that a woman be 21 years old in order to marry without her parents' consent (according to Lord Hardwick's Act of 1753).
  • Although, she was only 16 (listed at 18)at the time, Dolly's occupation is listed as "Spinster."
  • The witnesses to the marriage were Dolly's sister, Flo, and Eugenio San Luis, who was one of Ropo's shipmates on the White Star Line's ship, The Cedric.
  • Dolly's address was 43 Hurst Street (not her home address) which may have been a boarding house near the Liverpool Docks. Ropo's address of 18 Nile Street was most likely also a boarding house near the docks.
  • Henry Lowe's profession was listed as "Electrical Engineer" although he worked as fisherman on the trawlers on the River Mersey in Liverpool.
  • The marriage took place at the Church of St. Michael, which appears to have been a Catholic church, however the marriage certificate is signed by C.A. Fenton, Vicar. (Vicars were typically associated with the Protestant church, not the catholic church).
