Located on the banks of the Passaic River ten miles west of Manhattan, Newark was a bustling city with a population approaching nearly half a million. Home to dozens of banks, insurance companies, and over sixteen hundred factories, the city was fast becoming one of the largest commercial centers on the East Coast.

The city was divided up into five main neighborhoods: the North, South, East, West and Central wards. At the time, two-thirds of the residents in Newark were either immigrants of first-generation Americans. To view a map of Newark and the various immigrant communities, click here.
