My grandfather, Juan "Ropo" Trogani was born on December 3, 1896 in the Visayan Islands, in the province of Iloilo and the village of Tigbauan. The Philippine Islands is an archipelago made up of more than 7,000 islands in southeast Asia.

Just a few weeks after Ropo's birth, the Filipino patriot, Jose Rizal, was executed. This event served to further embolden the Filipino people who had declared war several months earlier against their Spanish colonial leaders, who had ruled the Philippines for more than three hundred years. When Spain was defeated by the Americans in the Spanish-American war, the Spanish government traded the Philippines to the United States "like a chip in a poker game." Thus began the Philippine-American war.

Like his father, Silbrio Trogani, Ropo joined the MERCHANT MARINES, where he worked for the WHITE STAR LINE, headquartered in LIVERPOOL, England.  This is where he met my grandmother, Dolly Lowe.
